Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Rhodes Arrival & Symi Transfer
Arrive at Rhodes International Airport (RHO). Immediately proceed via taxi (approx. 20 minutes, 25-30 EUR) to Rhodes Mandraki Harbor, not the main commercial port. Board the high-speed ferry to Symi (duration 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes). Upon arrival at Symi Harbor, walk the cobblestone quay to your accommodation. For dinner, select a taverna on the waterfront of Gialos, observing the multi-story neoclassical mansions painted in ochre and terracotta hues.
Day 2: Symi Architectural Detail & Panormitis
Commence a morning walk through Symi Town (Ano Symi and Gialos). Ascend the Kali Strata, a 500-step stone staircase connecting the port to the upper village. Document the 19th-century merchant houses with their intricate iron balconies and painted window frames. In the afternoon, arrange a water taxi from Gialos to the Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis (approx. 25 minutes boat ride). Observe the bell tower and Byzantine icons within the monastic complex. Return by water taxi before 6:00 PM to avoid peak return queues.
Day 3: Symi to Tilos Transfer
Board the morning ferry from Symi Harbor back to Rhodes Mandraki Harbor (duration 1.5 hours). From Rhodes, transfer directly to the ferry for Tilos Livadia Port (duration 2 to 3 hours, depending on vessel type). This requires a 15-minute walk between the two ferry piers if using different operators, or a brief taxi ride. Arrive at Livadia, Tilos. Check into your guesthouse. In the evening, walk the seafront promenade of Livadia and select a taverna specializing in fresh catch from the Aegean Sea, often displayed on ice at the entrance.
Day 4: Tilos Eco-Path & Micro-Villages
Rent a small scooter or car for the day (allow 30 EUR to 45 EUR). Drive to the abandoned village of Mikro Chorio, observing the stone ruins of 17th-century dwellings. Continue to the Monastery of Agios Panteleimon, a fortified structure on the island’s west side. For a coastal experience, access the beach at Eristos, a 1-kilometer stretch of sand and fine pebbles. Alternatively, hike the signed trail from Livadia to Lethra Beach (45 minutes one-way), a secluded bay with pebble shores and deep water for swimming.
Day 5: Tilos to Nisyros Transfer
Board the morning ferry from Tilos Livadia Port to Nisyros Mandraki Port (duration 1 hour 15 minutes). Upon arrival, check into your accommodation in Mandraki, the island’s main settlement. In the early afternoon, take a local bus or taxi to the Stefanos Crater within the volcano caldera (approx. 20 minutes drive from Mandraki). Walk the designated path down into the crater floor, noting the sulfur vents and the audible geothermal activity. Return to Mandraki and ascend to the Paliokastro fortress for unobstructed panoramic views of the island’s coastline before dinner.
Day 6: Nisyros Volcano & Kos Departure
Spend the morning in Mandraki. Walk the narrow alleys, observing the whitewashed houses and stone-paved courtyards. Visit the Archaeological Museum of Nisyros (entry fee approx. 3 EUR) for artifacts detailing the island’s volcanic geology and early settlement. Board the midday ferry from Nisyros Mandraki Port to Kos Town Port (duration 1 hour). From Kos, take a taxi (approx. 30 minutes, 35-40 EUR) to Kos International Airport (KGS) for your outbound flight.
