Detailed Description
Your day begins early with a bus ride from Chania to Omalos, a picturesque village located in the White Mountains. Here, you can enjoy breakfast while taking in panoramic mountain views. Once energized, the hike commences from the plateau, offering a breathtaking descent into Samaria Gorge, one of Europe’s longest and most renowned natural wonders.
The trek, spanning approximately 10 miles, leads you through a diverse landscape of towering walls, ancient pine and cypress forests, and along the water springs that provide refreshing stops along the way. The gorge is also home to a range of flora and fauna, including the protected Cretan wild goat, Kri-Kri. Midway through the hike, you’ll come across awe-inspiring rock formations and narrow passages that make this journey truly memorable.
Passing through the abandoned village of Samaria adds a historical touch to the expedition, providing insight into the area’s past. Upon reaching the end of the gorge, the charming coastal village of Agia Roumeli awaits. Here, you can unwind and savor a delicious meal at one of the local taverns, take a dip in the Libyan Sea, or simply relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
In the late afternoon, board a ferry that will transport you along Crete’s picturesque southern coast back to Sougia, where a bus will be ready to take you back to Chania, arriving around 7:30 PM.
