Starting Time: 09:00 AM. 18:00 PM.

Overview

This is Xpeeria’s choice for your food tour experience in Athens because it is completely different from other crowded and generic food tours. Instead of getting lost in a big crowd, you are part of a small group of maximum 8 guests. This makes it easy to talk to your guide and walk through the narrow market streets where big groups cannot fit. We also love that they can change the 15+ food tastings to fit your personal dietary needs without making you pay for an expensive private tour. You will try a massive variety of traditional pastries, cheeses, and street food, all while supporting a zero-waste project that gives any leftover food directly to local shelters and people in need.

Detailed Description

Your food walk starts at Korai Square, where you meet your guide and head straight into the historic center for a classic local breakfast. You will try traditional wood-fired tyropita (cheese pie) filled with real Greek feta, and crispy spanakopita (spinach pie) made with thin, flaky phyllo dough. Next, you will stop by a historic sweet shop to see how loukoumades are made – traditional Greek donuts served hot, covered in sweet honey syrup and cinnamon.

From there, you will walk right into the busy Varvakios Central Food Market. This is where locals buy their food every day, and you can see everything from fresh fish on ice to local meats. Right next to the market stalls, you will sit down at a traditional coffee shop to try a classic Greek coffee brewed slowly in hot sand. Afterward, you will visit a top-rated local deli to taste different cured meats and unique cheeses from various Greek islands.

The final part of the tour takes you through an old artisan neighborhood to buy warm koulouri (sesame bread rings) right out of the oven at one of the city’s oldest bakeries. You will then walk down the historic spice shops of Evripidou Street to enter a traditional delicatessen. Here, you will learn how to spot high-quality extra virgin olive oil and sample local honey. Finally, the tour ends at a popular local spot for a real souvlaki pita stuffed with pork or chicken gyros, tomatoes, onions, and creamy tzatziki, just a short walk from the metro station.
